Austin, TX, Outbound - Report

Jan Dostal

Ester's FolliesNine Louisville FF members recently returned from an exchange to Austin, Texas.  We all had a great time.  The weather was perfect, and we were treated royally by the Austin FF chapter.

The first night there (Monday, 10/29) we attended Esther's Follies, an Austin entertainment institution.  It was a live performance centering on current political humor -- timely and very clever.  All the entertainers and the magicianTexas State History Museum were terrific.  Austin, TX - City Hall

The next day (Friday, 10/30) we toured Austin City Hall which has won awards for being "green" environmentally.  It was unbelievable and so politically correct and energy efficient.   We then visited the Texas State History Museum and learned all about the great state of Texas.

On Halloween night (Saturday, 10/31) our hosts staged a lively Halloween Party, complete with costumes and great food at the home of oneHalloween of their members.  A good time was had by all.

Texas Book FairThe next day (Saturday, 11/01) most of us went to the Texas Book Festival, the largest of its kind and very informative.

That evening we went to the Broken Spoke, an Austin honky-tonk dance hall.  Chris lived up to hisBroken Spoke resolve -- no two-stepping for him!

Treadgill'sThe exchange formally ended (Sunday, 11/02) with a morning brunch at Threadgill's (where Janis Joplin got her start), complete with more Texas music.

In our spare time most of us visited the LBJ Presidential Library and/or Westcave, an Austin natureWestcave Preserve preserve.

FFLK members participating in this exchange were Sherry Farson, Karen Foreman, Chris Kinberger, Alice and George Moore, Pete and Mary Lou Peters, Margarette Perkins, and Jan Dostal.

I think it is fair to say that we would all return to Austin and to the great FF people at our first opportunity.
